Configure Mac OS X's Terminal application with some reasonable defaults
- from the "Terminal" menu, choose "Preferences…"
- from the menu labelled "Declare terminal type ($TERM) as", choose "vt102"
- close the "Terminal Preferences" window by clicking onto the prominent red dot in the top left hand corner or one of the other known methods
- from the "Terminal" menu, choose "Window Settings"
- under the header "When the shell exits", choose the radio button "Close only if the shell exited cleanly"
- click onto "Use Settings as Defaults"
- close the "Terminal Inspector" palette by clicking onto the spot in the upper left corner of the window that turns red when the mouse pointer moves over it
- quit Terminal.app
