Map a Network Drive on Windows

  1. right-click onto the "My Computer" icon (in Windows XP this resides in the "Start" menu, in previous versions it resides on the desktop)
  2. choose "Map Network Drive..."
  3. enter a drive letter and a share name
    • for your home directory the drive letter should be "U:" and the share name "\\itsmb\<your username>" for non-ugrads and "\\ugitsmb\<your username>" for ugrads
  4. if the drive shall automatically be mapped when the machine boots, tick the checkbox, if not, untick it
  5. click "OK"
  6. provide your username and password for authentication
  7. click "OK"

Map a Network Drive on Mac OS X

  1. From the Mac OS X Finder, select the Go menu and choose Connect to Server...
  2. In the Address: field, type in the network path of the server or computer. Here are some examples:
    • for non-ugrads
      • smb://itsmb.it.usyd.edu.au/<your username>
      • smb://itsmb/<your username>
      • smb://itsec/<your username> (using encrypted passwords)
    • for ugrads
      • smb://itsmb.ug.it.usyd.edu.au/<your username>
      • smb://ugitsmb/<your username>
  3. Click on the Connect button
  4. If you are requested to provide authentication information, enter the following:
    • Workgroup/Domain: IT
    • Username: <your username>
    • Password: <your password>
  5. After authentication is complete, the mapped drive will appear on your desktop where you can interact with it like any other folder on your hard drive.
