Password Changing

The two password domains are known as undergraduate (ugrad) and non-undergraduate (non-ugrad). See ComputerAccounts for a more general description of the two domains and the populations they service.

Changing passwords

• ugrad
  • Unix/Linux users can change the password of the account to which they are logged in by using the command passwd. Password changes made on any server within the ugrad domain are replicated across all the servers in that domain.
  • Ugrad passwords can also be changed by those whose login names occur in the file /local/etc/admin.
  • Windows and Macintosh users can change the password for a ugrad account via a web browser on the School intranet.

• non-ugrad
  • Unix/Linux users can change the password of the account to which they are logged in by using the command passwd. Password changes made on any server within the non-ugrad domain are replicated across all the servers in that domain.
  • Windows and Macintosh users can change the password for a non-ugrad account via a web browser on the School intranet.

• Please note: Some accounts share the same home directory on both ugrad and non-ugrad systems. Our password changing software ensures that such accounts also share a single password.

• Undergraduate Students who forget their password need to see the tutor in their next scheduled class.

• Masters Coursework Students who forget their password need to see the staff at the MastersHelpDesk or the tutor in their next scheduled class.

• Others who forget their password will need to contact the DutyProgrammer to have it reset.

Please note that password changing in the School of Information Technologies has no effect on UniKey/extro passwords which are maintained separately by the University's ICT division.
