Windows XP Service Pack 2

Windows XP Service Pack 2 is a massive update to XP. It improves several components such as the Windows Firewall and Windows Update.

The installation is fairly easy, provided you have done a few things.

Installation

  1. The installation file is on the windows share, so map in \\itsmb\windows as e.g. w:
  2. Drill down in the w-drive to W:\Microsoft\windows\XP\SP\SP2 and copy the file WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe to your local desktop
  3. Double click the WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe file and follow the instructions. The installation takes some time - it's a large file - DO NOT INTERRUPT THE INSTALLATION
  4. When the computer finishes, it will tell you and you will then need to restart the pc.
  5. On the first reboot you will be prompted to turn on Automatic Updates, choose to do this or not - your choice.
  6. When you get back to the desktop, go to Control Panel - Start, Settings, Control Panel and double click the new Windows Firewall icon
    • Select the Advanced tab
    • Click the ICMP Settings button and place a check mark in the Allow incoming equo request check box - this allows us to ping your machine. Failure to do this may one day result in us assigning your IP address to someone else with the result that you cannot get network access.
