School of Information Technologies   Web Proxy
 TitleIndex   WordIndex

Internet web access from machines in the School requires the use of a web proxy. This allows the use of a large local web cache, which can both improve download response for commonly accessed sites, and save download charges for the School.
Configure the web proxy settings for your browser using:

        Go to
Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings
        and
        Set to "Automatically detect Settings"
        Restart Internet Explorer

If the above did not work try setting it manually:
                Go to
Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings
                and
Set to "Use automatic configuration script"
                and enter the address
                http://www.it.usyd.edu.au/proxy.pac

        Go to
Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Network -> Settings -> Automatic Proxy Configuration URL:
and type in the text box
        http://www.it.usyd.edu.au/proxy.pac

        Press Reload

        Go to
Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Proxies -> Automatic Proxy Configuration URL:
and type in the text box
        http://www.it.usyd.edu.au/proxy.pac

        Press Reload

If your browser does not support automatic proxy configuration you need to set your proxies manually to:

www-cache.it.usyd.edu.au:8000

and to exclude it.usyd.edu.au from proxies if the browser allows.

Proxy Authentication

Any web connection made from a ugrad machine requires the user to authenticate against the proxy server with their login name and password. This is used to administer WebLimits for all connections made from this group of machines.
