Biographical details

Dr Abelardo Pardo specialises in technology enhanced learning with emphasis on learning and behavioral analytics, computer supported collaborative learning, and personalization of learning experiences. He is a member of the steering committee of the Society for Learning Analytics Research. In his (scarce) spare time, he maintains the blog T2T. Techies meet Teachers, which focuses on issues related to technology when used in learning experiences.

Research interests

Dr Abelardo Pardo's research is driven by his belief that people and communities can all benefit from the use of technology to improve their overall wellbeing. He's developing computer applications that can sense and provide feedback on the way we carry out everyday tasks and activities, leading to improvements in areas from education and business to health and general wellbeing.

"I'm passionate about the possibilities offered by computer technology today to improve people's lives, and how these possibilities are within reach of an increasing percentage of the world's population.

"Computers can now sense and record many details of our daily lives. They can also analyse these observations and present this data in a useful way so that people can increase their self-awareness and improve their lives.

"For example, in a learning environment we can develop an application to observe how students communicate with their classmates, interact with the course material, use the required tools and so on. We can then detect their current behaviour and propose measures that would make the learning process more pleasant and efficient.

"In a corporate environment we can analyse the interaction patterns among employees and suggest how certain resources, connections and actions might enhance knowledge sharing in the organisation.

"In a health-related environment we can use mobile devices to analyse people's daily activities and suggest actions to improve their overall health.

"In this way my research focuses on developing applications that help people to increase their self-knowledge, and thus to improve the way they carry out activities in their daily lives.

"I've been working in this field for 15 years, and joined the University of Sydney in 2012. The University offers an ideal interdisciplinary context in which ideas from one area can be applied to other areas, such as using sensors and computer applications in the area of developing healthy lifestyle habits."
