Biographical details

"Biomedical engineering is one of the fastest growing branches of engineering in the world today," says Professor Andrew Ruys, the coordinator and head of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Sydney.

Professor Ruys has been involved in advanced ceramics and biomaterials research for over 20 years, with a special focus on bioactive materials - those capable of forming a chemical bond with tissues in the body.

He has some 160 career publications covering a wide range of topics, including biomaterials synthesis and testing, biomaterial-cell interactions, nanocomposites, functionally graded materials, hydroxyapatite, bioglass, bioactive coatings, ceramic phase equilibria, and ceramic forming techniques. He is a world authority on hydroxyapatite bioceramics, having achieved a number of world firsts with this promising bioactive bioceramic.

Research interests

Professor Andrew Ruys is a leading researcher in the field of biomedical engineering, with a particular focus on the synthesis and testing of biomaterials and the design of associated medical devices and technologies. He has devoted the past three decades of his life to bioceramics research, including developing a synthetic material to which the body will respond as if it were natural bone. Applications of this material include load-bearing orthopaedic implants and spinal disc prostheses.

"Since I was an honours student I have been working in bioceramics research - especially with hydroxyapatite (HA). HA is chemically similar to bone, and uniquely bonds with bone in the body, so is ideal as a porous scaffold for bone tissue or as a bioactive coating on a metal implant. Unfortunately, however, it is too brittle to be used as a load-bearing implant. Thus it is a highly promising bioceramic, but its full potential is far from realised.

"I have researched just about every aspect of HA, and am pleased to have achieved several world firsts, including producing the first HA with fracture toughness comparable to bone, and pioneering silicon-doping of HA for enhanced bioactivity.

"Other bioceramics I work with include bioglass, ZTA, functionally graded bioceramics and diamond-like-carbon biocoatings. As well as bioceramics I work with bioactive polymers, biometals and biocomposites, which are important for medical devices such as Cochlear implants.

"I have also spent many years researching the design of medical devices for orthopaedic and blood-interfacing implants. These include spinal disc prostheses, wheelchair propulsion systems, knee wear simulators, cochlear implants, sleep apnoea devices, drug delivery implants, jaw splints and bionic eye materials.

"While I was an undergraduate student I was inspired by my then professor, Eric McCartney, who was Australia's original pioneer of bioceramics, and the emerging discoveries he and his contemporaries were making which showed that it was possible to make a synthetic material that the body would respond to as if it was bone. That material was HA.

"Professor McCartney retired around that time. Inspired by his vision and pioneering research, I have devoted the past three decades of my life to bioceramics research and to the associated design of medical devices and technologies."
