Professor Joseph Davis
Professor of Information Systems and Services
Director of Knowledge Discovery and Management Research Group
Theme Leader - Service Computing, Centre for Distributed and High Performance Computing
School of Computer Science
Prof. Davis is the Professor of Information Systems and Services at the School of Computer Science. He has been active researcher in the information systems field, with a focus on research questions at the intersection between information systems and computer science, namely on semantic information processing, crowdsourcing, decision support, and service computing. In particular, he has contributed extensively to understanding the creation, sharing and utilisation of information and knowledge in organisations and the links to decision making. He is a recipient of the IBM Faculty Research award for IT services-related research. His research has been funded by the Australian Research Council, Carnegie Bosch Institute, and IBM Research Labs, among others. He is a Charter Member of the Association for Information Systems, a Senior Member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and a Member of the IEEE.
Professor Joseph Davis’ primary research interests relate to knowledge management, ontologies and semantic technologies, crowdsourcing and service computing.
"Knowledge exists in multiple forms. It can be deeply tacit, built up by humans through years of experience in solving problems in particular domains, or buried in very large datasets and document collections.
"At the heart of my research is the problem of extracting, using and sharing useful knowledge by individuals, groups and organisations.
"The recognition that valid and useful knowledge is one of the most critical resources available to humankind is something that drives my research. I am excited by the opportunities afforded by the emergence and evolution of the internet and the World Wide Web, and by the subsequent large-scale digital capture and wide availability of 'big data'. My work involves developing new and more effective methods of extracting and deploying useful knowledge from such data.
"I am also passionate about ensuring that the results of such work are made available to a wide range of stakeholders.
"My crowdsourcing research involves the design and deployment of hybrid systems that integrates the distinctive strengths of both machine and human computation in order to solve complex problems that are extremely difficult to be solved exclusively by machines or humans.
"I have been an active researcher in this field for nearly three decades, and joined the University of Sydney in 2000. The research environment here is conducive is performing high-quality research. There are also many opportunities for collaboration with other researchers at the University, nationally and internationally, as well as some very high-calibre research students from different parts of the world."
