Thesis title: Modeling Stakeholder Engagement Through Social Networks: The Integrated Health Care System Project.

Supervisors: Petr MATOUS , Ken CHUNG

Thesis abstract:

We model the engagement and collaboration of key stakeholders within the Australian health care system. A health care system is described as a network of health care providers working together to give the best possible care for patients. Our focus here is on how key stakeholders integrate – in other words, how the health care providers refer patients, provide team care arrangements, socialize and receive advice from each other. An integrated health care project was implemented in New South Wales, Australia, to improve integration between stakeholders of a health care system. While there are a number of lenses on health care integration, very few studies have used social networks theory and methodology to examine an integrated network of stakeholders in health care. It is important to understand which facilities are currently working together; which ones are not working with others; where are the gaps in referrals and relationships that need to be strengthened and addressed. The project is on-going and in this paper, we propose several social network analytics as measures to understand health care integration – before intervention and post-intervention. The data collected will identify areas and processes for improving integration. Moreover, this paper presents a model that highlights properties of social networks are used to suggest the best predictors for health care integration. The results will help fill the gap in knowledge on how social networks can be used for understanding (i) how stakeholder engagement and collaboration in projects can be modeled using social networks; (ii) methodology for network data collection and analysis of stakeholder engagement; and (iii) how social networks theory and methodology can help identify gaps in health care integration projects.
