Research interests

The successful commercial mining of ore deposits requires accurate modelling of the orebody's boundaries, to enable its efficient extraction without needless mining of surrounding rock. But currently much of the geological data required to achieve this is processed manually, making the process labour intensive and slow. Dr Katherine Silversides' research aims to automate the process of identifying orebody boundaries, making it faster, more accurate and more efficient.

"It is a common misconception that all material removed from a mine is valuable ore. In fact, the mining process typically removes substantial amounts of waste material in order to reach specific mineralised areas. Greater knowledge of in-ground geology would support more precise use of equipment and operators.

"My research aims to provide quick, automated or semi-automated processing of the relevant geological data to allow objective, fast processing of new drill holes and faster ore boundary identification and mining model updates. This will provide improved knowledge of ore and waste locations, allowing for more accurate mine planning.

"I have used a range of data sources, including geophysical downhole logging (such as marker shales in natural gamma logs and magnetic susceptibility), geochemical assays, 'measure while drilling' metrics from drill rigs and reflectance spectroscopy.

"In processing this data I have applied techniques including Gaussian processes, dynamic time warping, continuous wavelet transforms and several linear unmixing techniques.

"I'm interested in how different techniques and methods not currently used in this area can be used to automatically process and identify signals in geological data, because I believe these have the potential to make strong improvements to mining processes.

"I completed my undergraduate and PhD studies at the University of Sydney, and have held my current position here since 2014. I have extensive and in-depth knowledge of the banded iron formation (BIF) hosted iron ore deposits of Western Australia's Hammersley region, but I'm also interested in extending my research into other deposits and commodities."
