Biographical details

Dr Philip Boughton has been active in the development and evaluation of implantable medical devices and biomaterials for over 14 years. He is currently the Institute Program Manager & Lecturer for Biomedical Engineering & Technologies (BMET) at the University of Sydney, Australia's largest Biomedical Engineering program. His role involves strategic interface with the next generation of biomedical engineers, medical device industry and clinicians.

His areas of expertise range from implantable medical device design and development through to biomaterials engineering, biomechanics, orthopaedics, tissue engineering, manufacturing, 3D printing, mechanical testing, materials characterization, sterilization validation, failure forensics and quality systems.

Dr Boughton has initiated, supervised and cosupervised over 150 industry and clinically linked engineering and medicine student projects.

Prior to his appointment at the University of Sydney, Dr Boughton helped pioneer Australia's first spinal disk implant to human clinical stages in Australia and Europe in his role as clinical research manager for a government-funded start-up company linked with Synthes-Depuy.

He firmly believes that "biomedical engineering meshes together engineering and biomedical disciplines to enable innovative thinking, quality design and development, system optimization and failure forensics for medical devices, technologies and systems."
