Research interests

While the earth underneath our feet is generally solid, it can fail under particular conditions - sometimes with devastating consequences. Dr Pierre Rognon's research aims to predict these conditions and develop appropriate safety measures to mitigate the effects of events such as landslides and avalanches.

"I can walk on a sandy beach without sinking into it. My house stands on the ground without sinking into it. That's because soil is solid. It's not always, though. Think of landslides. And the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

"The conditions under which soils will fail, the way in which landslides will flow - these are not easy to predict. Soils are made of countless grains, which can vary in size from a millimetre to a fraction of a micrometre. The shape of the grains, too, and the way they interact through contact, and the presence of water between them - all of these parameters are crucial to predicting whether the soil can withstand the load of my house, and where exactly the landslide will flow and stop.

"I discovered mountains when I was kid, hiking and skiing in the French Alps. I also developed a fascination with avalanches. How could the snow, which had seemed glued to the slope one second before, suddenly break and start flowing? Understanding the flowing properties of these materials is the key to designing appropriate safety zones and protection structures for people and infrastructure.

"My passion for observing and understanding nature drives my research. From avalanches to landslides to earthquake dynamics, I am constantly fascinated by the power of the human brain in being able to understand the 'hows' of such complex, large-scale phenomena.

"How long do I spend in my office, coding? How long do I spend in the laboratory, with a screwdriver in one hand and a force transducer in the other? I don't know; I don't count. But it is worth it, no doubt about that!"
