Thesis title: Pull-out capacity of soil anchors - Inspiration from trees

Supervisors: Pierre ROGNON , David AIREY

Thesis abstract:

Soil anchors are key to stabilising structures such as utility poles, suspensions bridges, communication towers, offshore wind turbines and oil rigs. This works aims at developing new designs of soil anchors by taking inspiration from nature, and understanding how trees can withstand wind loading through their root systems. Laboratory experiments and simulations will be developed to uncover the complex mechanical interaction of roots and their surrounding soil, and to identify the geometrical features governing root anchoring properties. Beside new designs of soil anchors with superior strength and lower cost, this research will lead to an improved understanding of the vulnerability of trees to uprooting.
