Research interests

As one of the biggest contributors to Australia's economy, improvements made to the mining industry translate directly to improvements in the nation's bottom line. For the large number of people employed by the sector they also represent a safer and more efficient working environment. Director and principal research engineer with the Rio Tinto Centre for Mine Automation Dr Steven Scheding is working to improve the safety and productivity of mining operations with those two consequences in mind.

"The primary aim of my research is to realise the vision of a fully autonomous, remotely operated mine. The benefits of this include improved safety and increased productivity, both of which have direct impacts on the community.

"For example, one of our research outputs has been the automation of mining drill rigs. This enables the operator of the rig to be located in a much safer area of the minesite - or indeed anywhere on the planet. This obviously increases the safety of the operator, and also greatly improves the predictability of drilling operations.

"This work has the potential to fundamentally change one of Australia's largest industries and the many people who work in it. It's also extremely important in economic terms - there aren't too many fields of research with such a direct link to improvement in the nation's gross domestic product.

"I've been working in mining-related research since 1995, and have been a staff member at the University of Sydney for 11 years. Being here has enabled the strong relationships I've managed to build with industry, through the University's recognition as a research leader in the area of robotics and automation."
