Research interests

While many urban dwellers feel attuned to subtle changes in the cityscape, few would be aware of the types of changes studied by Associate Professor Stuart Reid. He looks at the way large structures such as buildings, bridges and tunnels change over time due to concrete creep (movement under load) and shrinkage (contraction over time). He also studies the strength and safety of glass, and carries out risk and reliability analyses that aid in safety-related decision making. Through this research he contributes to the development of design and construction standards essential to public safety.

"Large concrete structures such as buildings, bridges and tunnels change over time, and these changes need to be understood and accommodated in order to ensure the continued safety of existing structures and the future safety of new ones.

"Further, glass kills more people in buildings-related accidents than anything else, yet it has traditionally been the responsibility of architects, not engineers, to specify the type of glass to be used. The strength (resistance to breakage) and safety (likelihood of injury as a result of breakage) of glass are not well understood, and this also needs to be improved.

"Studies of risk and reliability form the basis of decisions made by professionals on behalf of the community to ensure their safety and avoid unnecessary waste.

"Better understanding of each of these fields is essential to ensuring public safety and the most efficient use of public resources, and this is the essence of my research.

"Working at the University of Sydney gives me the freedom to pursue all of these areas. It also allows me to participate on the international stage, to develop contacts with industry, and to contribute to the development of standards as representative of academia."
