A complex adaptive system comprises a large number of interacting components, which collectively adapt and evolve within a changing environment.
From the project management perspective, a project can be seen as a Complex adaptive system of people cooperating to achieve a set of common goals. These people are interconnected by formal and informal communication paths and act as nodes in the system.
The concept of learning is at the very heart of this paradigm: learning takes place at the level of the individual, and "organisational learning" can be considered to be developing at the project level (and above) as an emergent property of the system.
Our research is centred on projects as complex adaptive systems, and includes bio-inspired algorithms, cognitive systems, humanitarian engineering, adaptive civil infrastructure, complexity in organisations, systems thinking approaches such as soft systems methodology, and logic of innovation.
