Perspectives on oceanic environmental problems – above and below water.
Using the approaches of the environmental humanities, we are exploring the stories, theories and representations describing Western and Indigenous relationships with the oceans — above and below water. We also investigate oceanic environmental problems, including loss of human habitats and cultures, species extinctions, depletion oceanic resources, destruction of oceanic topographies and declining health of seawater. Our aim is to offer new perspectives on the social and environmental challenges confronting our oceans and their ecologies.
As humanists we also focus on “Ocean Imaginaries” — oceans have long being seen as immeasurably mysterious, vast and bountiful, and therefore invulnerable to the limits of human-generated environmental problems. Imaginaries inform our understanding of the modern oceanic crises and influence our capacity to understand, relate to, and protect the world’s oceans.
