Cultural understandings of coastal environments in the Pacific.
Bringing together scholars from the University of Sydney, National Museum of Australia and the American Museum of Natural History, this research project explores how coastal peoples of the Pacific Ocean are responding as climate change and associated ecological challenges transform their ocean environments. We specifically look at how Pacific peoples are using objects to negotiate new cultural understandings of their shifting seas, and frameworks for living with them.
‘Living with Changing Seas’ employs diverse media, including text, film and exhibitions, to invite scholarly and public engagement between Pacific peoples whose daily lives are interwoven with the ocean and those whose actions in the wider world are changing it.
