Energy facts
- Each year, the University spends over $8 million on energy (electricity and gas) and consumes more than 75,000,000 kWh of electricity. Electricity usage represents the largest single contribution to the University’s total greenhouse gas emissions . The University of Sydney is among the top 230 energy users in the State
- Many office computers never get switched off or put on standby, needlessly consuming energy overnight and on weekends. A computer left on all day, every day, uses 1,000 kilowatts of electricity over a year, producing more than a tonne of carbon emissions (6).
- Around 90% of electricity in NSW comes from burning coal – a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.
