Environmental risk facts
- The Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 (POEO Act) contains offences relating to water, air and noise pollution, disposal of waste and land pollution. It is your legal responsibility to notify the University if there is a spill or other pollution event
- In 2008 59 tonnes of chemical and clinical/biological waste was disposed of via the University’s hazardous waste collection and disposal program. This represents a 15 per cent rise in hazardous waste volumes from 2007, due to increased laboratory research activities and the ongoing diversion of potentially hazardous waste from general waste to the hazardous waste stream.
- In addition to the hazardous waste generated and disposed of via the hazardous waste program during 2008, a further 400 tonnes of hazardous waste were disposed of via other means, for example bulk liquid waste disposal and incineration at Camden campus
