Inaugural Sydney Winter School in History and Philosophy of Science

Sydney Harbour Bridge

An intensive two-week residential course with research leaders from Australia’s most highly-ranked departments in the History and Philosophy of Science (HPS).

The Winter School is organised by the Sydney Centre for the Foundations of Science (SCFS), an interdisciplinary research centre exploring the logical, philosophical, and historical underpinnings of science and medicine. In the 2010 Excellence in Research Australia exercise, the University of Sydney was the only institution to achieve the highest possible score for all the three of the discipline areas History, Philosophy, and History and Philosophy of Specific Fields. The SCFS draws on these research strengths, bringing together staff from the Department of History and the Department of Philosophy (Faculty of Arts), and the Unit for History and Philosophy of Science (Faculty of Science). Browse this website for further information on the Centre and its activities.

The Winter School is a residential program designed for final-year undergraduate and Masters students considering pursuing postgraduate research in HPS. It will consist of four two-day segments each led by a Professorial-level research team-leader from the SCFS and including contributions from other members of their research teams. The aim is to give students both an introduction to the breadth of work that makes up the HPS field, and to introduce the latest developments in four specific areas. The four senior Professors will be closely involved with students throughout the course, and there will be a social program to allow informal interaction between staff and students.

Attendance at the Winter School is limited to twelve students to ensure high-quality interaction between staff and students. Applications for admission to the course should include an academic transcript, an academic reference from a current or former teacher, and a covering letter of not more than one page. We will be offering one international travelling scholarship for an outstanding student to attend the school. This will cover the cost of the enrolment fee for the school, accommodation, board, and airfare. We will also be offering two scholarships for students with exceptional promise. These latter scholarships will cover the enrolment fee, accommodation, and board. All applications will automatically be considered for the scholarships.

Please note that a $200 deposit to secure a place is required within one month of notification of a successful application.
