Alice Clark – Bachelor of Visual Arts

Alice Clark

Coming from the small farming town of Boorowa, near Young in country NSW, Alice Clark found the support of the E12 scheme invaluable in helping her to relocate to Sydney to study at Sydney College of the Arts (SCA). Having just completed her first semester, she’s loving living on campus and studying the subject she loves.

"I’ve loved art since I can remember. During high school I always knew I really wanted to go to uni, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. Then I thought, people are always saying you should do what you love, and I really love art, so that’s what I decided to do.

"I looked around at different courses before I settled on Sydney. I’d always wanted to come here, but I wasn’t sure if it would be possible. But then when I was in high school I came to visit the SCA and I just loved it – and from then on I really wanted to come here.

"The E12 scheme definitely helped me to get in. Having the early conditional offer made me work a bit harder, because I knew I would definitely have something if I got a certain mark. It’s such a good way to get in to uni, especially for people who live far away and need support with relocating.

"The orientation was really good too. There was even a separate one held at the SCA, just for people coming here. It really helped us to familiarise ourselves with the uni and to meet other people who were going to be doing the same course as us.

"And the scholarship has helped a lot with the cost of materials – which I need lots of in my course! – and with living expenses in general. I’m also saving some of it for in case I want to go on overseas exchange during my degree.

"I’m living on campus now, and it’s excellent – I’m thoroughly enjoying it. Moving out of home for the first time ever – and living with a bunch of people I’d never seen before in my life – was a bit of a learning curve! I figured it was going to go either one way or the other, but it’s gone really well for me. Being surrounded by people with all different ideas from mine has been really interesting. And it’s been really exciting learning new stuff.

"At the moment I’m specialising in print media. The SCA has the best printing equipment and materials, so I thought I’d take advantage of the opportunity to work with all that. And I’ve got good marks so far, so that’s really good. I’m pretty excited about what I’ll be doing next semester, too – I’m really looking forward to it.

"I’m really loving living in Sydney, I like uni life and I really like doing a course that’s fun and is what I love to do. No matter what else I end up doing, I’ll always be doing art in some way."
