Preparing to arrive

Congratulations on being offered a place at the University of Sydney. Now that you have accepted your offer, you need to organise an Australian student visa, and plan for your arrival in Australia. You can find more information about pre-arrival and pre-arrival preparations below:


Orientation

To help you settle into your semester at the University, we recommend you plan to arrive in time for the 2014 July Semester Study Abroad and Exchange Student Orientation.

You should attend one Meet and Greet Session, being held during 14-18 July, and the full day session on Monday, 21 July 2014.

Social events will also run throughout this period as detailed below, including the University of Sydney Union's Re-O-Day activities held during the 1st week of Semester 2 (July Semester) 2014.

Monday, 14 to Friday, 18 July 2014

What: Meet and Greet Session - Attend only one of these sessions
Day: Monday 14 to Friday 18 July 2014
Time: 10am - 11am
Where: Lecture Theatre 1, Merewether Building, Camperdown/Darlington Campus
Purpose: These sessions will provide you with practical information to help you get settled in Sydney, and ensure your first few weeks run as smoothly as possible. You will also have the chance to meet some Sydney students who have been on exchange and who will understand what you might be going through on arrival in your host country.

After the Meet and Greet Session on the following days, you are invited to join the following optional sessions.

What: Campus Tour by the University of Sydney Union (USU) (optional)
Day: Wednesday, 16 or Friday, 18 July 2014 (choose one)
Time: 11.15am - 12.15pm
Where: Depart from lobby outside Lecture Theatre 1, Merewether Building, Camperdown/Darlington Campus

What: New to Sydney - Accommodation Information Session (optional)
Day: Friday, 18 July, Wednesday, 23 July or Friday 25 July 2014 (choose one)
Time: 12.30 - 1.30pm
Where: Chemistry Lecture Theatre 3, Eastern Ave, Camperdown/Darlington Campus

What: Welcome to the University
When: 9.30am – 12.30pm
Where: The Great Hall, The Quadrangle, Camperdown Campus
Purpose: This is an official welcome to the University and introduction to key services and information about student life.

The welcome will be followed by refreshments/light lunch in the lawn area inside The Quadrangle.

What: Enrolment Advising Sessions
When: 12.30pm – 4.00pm
Where: Wallace Theatre, Camperdown Campus
Purpose: You will find out all you need to know about your enrolment, how to add and drop units of study, timetabling and other important academic matters and social events.

What: AFL Activities and BBQ Lunch
When: Tuesday, 22 July, 11:15am - 1pm
Where: The Square, Camperdown/Darlington Campus

All Study Abroad and Exchange Students are invited and encouraged to join the exciting AFL sports activities that will take place at The Square. A free BBQ lunch will be provided by Sydney Uni Sport and Fitness (SUSF) during the festivities.

What: Sydney Day Trips - free trip to Darling Harbour, The Rocks or Manly
When: Tuesday 22 July, 2pm
Where: Meet at the International Student Lounge, Level 4, Wentworth Building on the day for departure

Let us help you get to know some of Sydney’s most famous attractions. Choose from a trip to Manly Beach, The Rocks or Darling Harbour. Each tour will take approximately 3-4 hours. You must register online prior to attending the trip.

Do not miss out on the Welcome to Sydney Party! It will be a fun night with FREE food, one free drink for Access Members and great prizes to give away. The USU organises a range of activities for International students on Re-O-Day to introduce you to the University of Sydney community. They also provide an International Student Lounge with free computer access, pool tables, locker hire and staff to assist you.

Buddy Club

Each semester, the Study Abroad and Exchange Unit coordinates the Buddy Club, a social mentoring program, designed to help you build social networks, engage with local students, adjust to life in Australia and make the most out of your semester abroad.

In the past we have organised Koala Breakfasts, bushwalking in the Royal National Park, trivia evenings, pub nights, yum cha, harbour cruises, fancy dress parties, concerts, sports events, fairs, dinner parties, barbeques, guided tours, shopping, and fundraising events.

You will receive your personal invitation to join the Buddy Club Facebook Group and start connecting with other students before you arrive in Australia.
