Preparing to arrive

Congratulations on being offered a place at the University of Sydney. Now that you have accepted your offer, you need to organise an Australian student visa, and plan for your arrival in Australia. You can find more information about pre-arrival and pre-arrival preparations below:


To help you settle into your semester at the University, we recommend you plan to arrive in time for the 2014 July Semester Study Abroad and Exchange Student Orientation.

All dates and events below are currently tentative and subject to change.

You should attend one Meet and Greet Session, tentatively being held during 14-18 July, and the full day session on Monday 21 July 2014.

Social events will also run throughout this period as detailed below, including the University of Sydney Union's Re-O-Day activities held during week 1 of semester 2014.

Monday 14 to Friday 18 July 2014 (tentative)

What: Meet and Greet Session - Attend only one of these sessions
Day: Monday 14 to Friday 18 July 2014
Time: 10am - 11am
Where: International Services, Meeting Room 1, Level 4, Jane Foss Russell Building, Camperdown/Darlington Campus
Purpose: These sessions will provide you with practical information to help you get settled in Sydney, and ensure your first few weeks run as smoothly as possible. You will also have the chance to meet some Sydney students who have been on exchange and who will understand what you might be going through on arrival in your host country.

After the Meet and Greet Session on the following days, you are invited to join the following optional sessions.

What: Campus Tour by the University of Sydney Union (USU) (optional)
Day: Tuesday 15 or Thursday 17 July 2014 (choose one)
Time: 11.15am - 12.15pm
Where: Depart from Carslaw Lecture Theatre 157, Eastern Ave, Camperdown/Darlington Campus

What: New to Sydney - Accommodation Information Session (optional)
Day: Tuesday 15 or Thursday 17 July 2014 (choose one)
Time: 12.30 - 1.30pm
Where: Carslaw Lecture Theatre 157, Eastern Ave, Camperdown/Darlington Campus

Monday 21 July 2014 (tentative)

What: Welcome to the University
When: 9.30am – 12.30pm
Where: The Great Hall, The Quadrangle, Camperdown Campus
Purpose: This is an official welcome to the University and introduction to key services and information about student life.

The welcome will be followed by light refreshments at the International Student Lounge, Level 4, Wentworth Building.

What: Enrolment Advising Sessions
When: 12.30pm – 4.00pm
Where: Eastern Avenue Auditorium in the Eastern Avenue Auditorium and Theatre Complex, Camperdown Campus
Purpose: You will find out all you need to know about your enrolment, how to add and drop units of study, timetabling and other important academic matters and social events.

Social Program

Friday 18 to Sunday 20 July 2014 (tentative)

The Study Abroad and Exchange team offers a range of pre-semester trips to help you to meet other international students and to explore Sydney and its beautiful surrounds.

All dates and events below are currently tentative and subject to change.

What: Orientation Escape to Hunter Valley and Port Stephens by Extreme Adventures
When: Saturday 19 July – Sunday 20 July 2014 (1 night)

Tuesday 22 July 2014 (tentative)

Social events will also be organised by the University of Sydney Union (USU) and Sydney Uni Sport and Fitness (SUSF).

What: Sydney Day Trips
When: Tuesday 22 July, 1pm
Where: Register interest before event then meet at the International Student Lounge, Level 4, Wentworth Building on the day for departure

Let us help you get to know some of Sydney’s most famous attractions. Choose from a trip to Manly Beach, The Rocks or Darling Harbour. Each tour will take approximately 4 hours. For further information visit the International Student Lounge Facebook page.

What: Welcome to Sydney Party!
When: Tuesday 22 July, 7pm
Where: Manning Bar, Manning Road, Camperdown Campus

Do not miss out on the Welcome to Sydney Party! It will be a fun night with FREE food, one free drink for Access Members and great prizes to give away. This would be a great opportunity for you to meet new friends before the semester starts so come along and have a great night! Please remember to bring your passport for identification.

Wednesday 30 July 2014 (tentative)

The USU organises a range of activities for International students during O-Week to introduce you to the University of Sydney community. They also provide an International Student Lounge with free computer access, pool tables, locker hire and staff to assist you.

What: Activities on and off campus with University of Sydney Union and Sports Union

Buddy Club

Each semester, the Study Abroad and Exchange Unit coordinates the Buddy Club, a social mentoring program, designed to help you build social networks, engage with local students, adjust to life in Australia and make the most out of your semester abroad.

In the past we have organised Koala Breakfasts, bushwalking in the Royal National Park, trivia evenings, pub nights, yum cha, harbour cruises, fancy dress parties, concerts, sports events, fairs, dinner parties, barbeques, guided tours, shopping, and fundraising events.

You will receive your personal invitation to join the Buddy Club Facebook Group and start connecting with other students before you arrive in Australia.
