General information about admission requirements
In general, for your application to be successful it must meet two requirements:
- you must possess at least one recognised academic qualification; and,
- your results in your qualification must be sufficiently competitive in comparison to those of the other applicants.
This webpage provides some information about admission requirements that may be useful.

Examples of the qualifications accepted by the University
- An Australian Year 12 qualification such as the NSW HSC (with an ATAR) or an equivalent interstate qualification
- One or more full-time years of study in a degree course from an Australian university
- A completed AQF diploma or higher level award course from TAFE or certain private providers
- A recognised preparation course
- Certain overseas senior secondary qualifications such as the International Baccalaureate, GCE A Levels, New Zealand National Certificate of Education, French Baccalaureat, etc.
- One or more full-time years of study in a degree course from certain universities overseas
The University does not admit students on the basis of professional qualifications, life experience, results in certificate courses or performance in admission tests such as the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT), or on the basis of any combination of these qualifications.
Entry standards
Entry standards are largely determined by demand, and the results required for admission into undergraduate courses vary from course to course and from one intake to the next.
The cut-offs published in the UAC Guide and the University’s undergraduate prospectus provide a general indication of the standard of results required for admission for all types of applicants, although the exact requirements for each intake can vary considerably.
Some courses also have additional selection criteria, which means that applicants are not selected solely on the basis of their results in their academic qualifications. Examples include the audition for admission into a music course at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the questionnaire and the portfolio presentation for the Bachelor of Visual Arts, and the Special Tertiary Admission Test for the Bachelor of Veterinary Science.
Special admission and concessional entry
The University offers a variety of special entry schemes to assist applicants whose results may not be quite good enough to qualify them for admission into the course of their choice. Some of these schemes are designed to assist applicants whose results have been affected by disadvantage, while others are aimed at certain groups such as elite athletes or country students.
These schemes are only available to applicants who have an academic qualification recognised by the University.
