Outgoing University of Sydney medical students to Shanghai Jiao Tong

Number of places: Up to two University of Sydney students will be nominated to represent the Faculty under this scheme.

Institution: As part of the partnership between the University of Sydney Faculty of Medicine and Shanghai Jiao Tong Medical School, students can undertake an elective placement based at Renji Hospital Shanghai.

Students will be paired with a local medical student who studies within the English language stream of their program and it is hoped that there will be opportunities to learn something of Chinese language, culture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Students will have the opportunity to be attached to a range of sub-specialty areas which can be nominated at the time of application.

Renji Hospital was originally opened in 1844 but students will be placed in the new hospital in the Pudong district which houses the main teaching facilities, a 1,000 bed hospital and an adjacent paediatric and maternity hospital.

Language: Mandarin Chinese language skills are useful but not essential for this placement. Information on language courses available through the University of Sydney can be found on our Resources pages.

Duration: The placement will be for four weeks.

Other: Students are responsible for their own travel and living expenses. Fees for elective placement are waived under this agreement.

Incoming Shanghai medical students to University of Sydney

The medical school at Shanghai Jiao Tong will nominate up to two senior students from the Renji Hospital English language stream class to undertake up to eight weeks of clinical placement at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, one of the main teaching hospitals at the University of Sydney. Students should nominate a speciality area of interest and every effort will be made to accommodate these preferences. Students usually stay in home-stay accommodation. Travel and accommodation/living expenses are NOT covered by University of Sydney but tuition fees are waived under our agreement.
