Outgoing University of Sydney medical students to Vellore, India

Number of places: A maximum of four students will be nominated to represent the Faculty under this scheme.

Institution: The Christian Medical College, Vellore, is one of the oldest and most highly regarded hospitals in India. The main hospital and medical school is in Vellore, approximately three hours drive south of Chennai in Tamil Nadu in the south of India. CMC has a 75-bed rural hospital and community medicine program 45 minutes from Vellore called RUHSA. This placement would be based at RUHSA which has a busy medical, surgical, paediatric & obstetric in-patient, and out-patient service and a busy outreach program to primary care facilities in local villages.

Language: Hindi is not essential for this placement however you may be interested to undertake some language classes to facilitate your placement. Information on language courses available through the University of Sydney can be found at our Resources pages.

Duration: This placement is 4 weeks in duration.

Other: During 2012, the Sydney Medical School hosted two doctors (Dr Annie Illikkal Kunjuvareed and Dr Prashanth Hanumanthappa Ramammurthy) from RUHSA as part of an AusAid program and students had the opportunity to interact with them.

The Sydney Medical School collaborates with CMC, Weill Cornell Medical College and Cancer Council Australia on a Cervical Cancer Prevention project to rural women through RUHSA and students may be able to assist with this research project if the opportunity arises. (See video link here.) Students may also be able to spend some time at the main hospital in Vellore, depending on availability. There is onsite accommodation and meals available at RUHSA & Vellore.

Travel, accommodation and living expenses and arrangements will be the students’ responsibility.
