Susie Wood - PhD

Susie is currently a PhD student in the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. Susie won the first prize in the Australian Institute of Energy's Postgraduate Student Awards at both New South Wales and national level.

"I wanted to do my PhD on a topic related to energy and the environment and the University of Sydney had projects and funding available in this area. And, of course, Sydney is a great place to live! My research is on the mitigation of fugitive methane emissions using porous burner reactors."

John Nowakowski - PhD candidate

A PhD candidate in the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, John is currently looking into the behaviour of carbon nanotubes in fluid suspensions. His work involves computer-based modeling and experimentation in the field.

“During Open Day, I was wondering around the uni with my parents, and we happened to be walking past the Chemical Engineering building. My mother suggested we have a look, and as soon as I walked in, I knew there was something drawing me to this course. The combination of all of the things I enjoy most – Science, Computing, and English, was definitely a winner.”

Christina Yum - Honours

Christina’s Honours project focuses on personal and team task management, and how software tools can aid this process. She was recently awarded an Apple University Consortium Honours Scholarship for this project.

“I chose an IT course because it provides opportunities to apply your knowledge to different industries, domains and problems. Also, since technology is always changing, I know my career will be dynamic and hold my interest.”

Jonathan Kummerfeld - Honours

Jonathan’s research project is in artificial intelligence.

“This ability to use the new techniques in IT to tackle the great unsolved questions in the physical sciences is one of the reasons I find the field of IT so fascinating and exciting.

During my degree I’ve also been able to experience an amazing range of activities outside my course, including the university orchestras, athletics club, revues, programming competitions, musicals, annual balls, and more. I think these opportunities are an essential part of university life, and I’ve only scratched the surface of the huge array offered at Sydney.”

Yi Ji - Coursework

Yi Ji is studying a Master of Information Technology and is currently taking the opportunity to learn more about .NET and J2EE.

“I was looking for a strong technical degree, that gives the student a lot of practical skills, and the Master of Information Technology is the one. The University of Sydney is well-known, and the School of IT has a good reputation where I come from.”

Chris De Lima - Coursework

After 10 years on-the-job experience with IBM, Chris decided he needed some technical consolidation and looked to the University of Sydney’s School of IT. He then transferred to the Master of Information Technology Management to facilitate a move into consulting.

“I always have had the desire to be at the cutting edge, and being able to take the research path has been a great opportunity. In industry you learn what the company needs you to know for business. At university it’s about the principles, the fundamentals – ideas taught by bright lecturers who have made contributions to IT as a science.”

Rufaro Chikoko - Masters

Rufaro lives and works in the Republic of Ireland studied for his Masters in Project Management online.

"The curriculum coverage is what I was looking for. I could have done construction project management elsewhere if I wanted but feared to be bombarded with stuff that I already know. This course gives me perspectives from all kinds of industries."
