Meet our Sydney Law School students
Janice Sim - PhD

Since embarking on her PhD, Janice says her studies have adopted a multi-disciplinarian approach which border on the areas of law, criminology and socio-critical theory.
"My thesis, Risks Invisible: Parent and Carers who Kill examines the contexts around which the issues of child safety and child protection are situated. I found my time studying criminology at the University of Sydney very special and enjoyable, particularly because of the support network (of students, academics and staff) the University has to offer. I fully enjoyed reading Current Issues in Criminal Justice, a journal published by the University of Sydney’s Institute of Criminology which offers an array of interesting and topical subjects to stimulate the intellectual and creative mind.
Matthew Costa - Graduate Law

Matthew studied Graduate Law, and enjoyed the practical experience of the Social Justice Program.
“Like many students, I came to Sydney Law School seeking a strong legal education. But I didn’t realise that through the Faculty’s External Placement Program I would get to be part of a real legal practice. Working with the Refugee Advice and Casework Service, I had the opportunity to use my legal skills to benefit disadvantaged individuals and groups in our community. I didn’t just study, I participated. I learned things you can’t learn in a classroom. The experience broadened my perspective and changed my career and life goals in ways I never anticipated. The new Social Justice Program will extend clinical legal education opportunities to many more students, giving them the same invaluable chance to both learn and be of service to others."
