Course resolutions

The course resolutions detailed in this page apply to all courses included in the table below under section 1 (course codes). 

These resolutions must be read in conjunction with applicable University By-laws, Rules and policies including (but not limited to) the University of Sydney (Coursework) Rule 2014 (the 'Coursework Rule'), the Coursework Policy 2021 (the 'Coursework Policy'), the Learning and Teaching Policy 2019, the Resolutions of the Faculty, University of Sydney (Student Academic Appeals) Rule 2021, the Academic Honesty in Coursework Policy 2015 and the Academic Honesty Procedures 2016. 2  Attendance pattern

The attendance pattern for this course is full time only.

3  Master's type

The master's degree in these resolutions is a professional master's course, as defined by the Coursework Policy.

4  Admission to candidature

Admission to this course is on the basis of a secondary school leaving qualification such as the NSW Higher School Certificate (including national and international equivalents), tertiary study or an approved preparation program. English language requirements must be met where these are not demonstrated by sufficient qualifications taught in English.

Special admission pathways are open for mature aged applicants who do not possess a school leaving qualification, educationally disadvantaged applicants and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Applicants are ranked by merit and offers for available places are issued according to the ranking.

5  Requirements for award

(1)  The units of study that may be taken for the Bachelor of Design in Architecture (Honours) and Master of Architecture are set out in Table A for the Bachelor of Design in Architecture (Honours) and Master of Architecture.

(2)  To qualify for the award of Bachelor of Design in Architecture (Honours) and Master of Architecture, a candidate must complete a total of 240 credit points, comprising:

(a) 132 credit points of 1000-level to 3000-level units of study from Table A, including:

(i) 120 credit points of core units of study

(ii) 12 credit points of elective units of study

(b) 108 credit points of 4000-level and above units of study from Table A, including;

(i) 30 credit points of honours preparatory and dissertation core units of study

(ii) 48 credit points of Master of Architecture core units of study.

(iii) 24 credit points of Capstone units

(iv) 6 credit points of elective units of study.

6  Requirements for the degree with Honours

(1)  Integrated Honours is available to all students.

(2) To exit with Honours, a student must satisfactorily complete 192 credit points (as noted in Table A including the Honours preparatory units and dissertation core units of study)

(3)  The class of Honours, if any, will be determined using a mark derived from the Weighted Average Mark (WAM) at 40 percent and the combined WAM for ARCH4009 (Research Methods in Architecture) and ARCH4010 (Architecture Dissertation) at 60 percent.

(4) First Class, Second Class and Third Class Honours are awarded as specified in the Coursework Policy, and the Resolution of the Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning

7  Progression rules

(1)  Progression to the Master of Architecture component of this double degree requires:

(a) a credit average across all 1000-3000 level units in the Bachelor of Design in Architecture

(b) completion of the Master of Architecture prerequisite unit of study, BDES3025 Architecture Professional Practice

(2)  In exceptional circumstances, a candidate that does not meet these requirements may be allowed to progress to the Master of Architecture component with approval of the Head of School and Dean of the University of Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning.

8  Cross-institutional study

Cross-institutional study is not available in this course.

9  International exchange

The University school permits candidates in this course to participate in international exchange programs in second year, or semester 1 of fifth year.

10  Course transfer

(1)  A candidate may abandon the combined program and elect to complete a Bachelor of Design in Architecture, in accordance with the resolutions governing that degree.

(2)  Candidates who discontinue after having satisfactorily completed 144 credit points may exit with the Bachelor of Design in Architecture.

(3)  Candidates who discontinue after having satisfactorily completed 192 credit points, including requirements for Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3, may exit with the Bachelor of Design in Architecture (Honours), provided that they meet the requirement for Honours specified in clause 6 of these resolutions.

(4)  Completion of the Master of Architecture in the future will require a new application for admission to that course and completion in accordance with the resolutions governing that degree. Students should not expect that all prior study will be eligible for credit into a new candidature of the Master of Architecture.

11  Credit for previous study

Credit transfer is subject to the provisions of the Coursework Policy and the Resolutions of the Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning. Credit may be granted in the Master of Architecture for one or more units of study completed in excess of the requirements for completion of the Bachelor of Design in Architecture only if this prior learning is deemed by the Head of School and Dean to contribute to the degree requirements of the Master of Architecture.

12  Transitional provisions

(1)  These resolutions apply to students who commenced their candidature after 1 January 2023 and students who commenced their candidature prior to 1 January 2023 who elect to proceed under these resolutions. Students who commenced their candidature prior to 1 January 2023 may complete the requirements in accordance with the resolutions in force at the time of their commencement.
