Commerce and Logistics Management

This program combines the Master of Commerce and the Master of Logistics Management. Both degrees are studied concurrently and will be awarded after a minimum of two and a half years of full-time study.

Degree structure and progression

Degree requirements

To be awarded the Master of Commerce and Master of Logistics Management, students complete 18 units of study (108 credit points), comprising:

(i) For the Master of Commerce component:

  • two commerce core units of study (12 credit points) - one in the first semester of study and one in the final semester
  • a maximum of three commerce foundational units of study (18 credit points) (excluding TPTM5001) #
  • a specialisation selected from the 'Commerce specialisations' (excluding Logistics and Supply Chain Management)
  • additional elective units of study from the 'Commerce specialisations' subject areas.

# Graduates with a bachelor’s degree qualification in Commerce or Business may apply for waivers for foundational units.

(ii) For the Master of Logistics Management component:

  • four core logistics management units of study (24 credit points)
  • four elective logistics management units of study (24 credit points).

Commerce core units of study

Students must complete both core units of study.

  • BUSS5000 Critical Thinking in Business (must be completed in the first semester of study) #
  • BUSS6000 Succeeding in Business (must be completed in the final semester of study)

# Commencing Commerce students who wish to be considered for a waiver of BUSS5000 must complete a 60-minute invigilated test in one of two scheduled sessions to be held at The University of Sydney Business School in the week prior to semester commencement.

Commerce foundational units of study

Students select a maximum of three foundational units of study (18 credit points) from those listed below.

(i) Foundational units offered by the University of Sydney Business School:

  • ACCT5001 Accounting Principles
  • CLAW5001 Legal Environment of Business
  • FINC5001 Capital Markets and Corporate Finance
  • IBUS5001 Strategy, Innovation and Global Business
  • INFS5001 Project Management
  • MKTG5001 Marketing Principles
  • QBUS5001 Quantitative Methods for Business
  • WORK5003 Management and Organisations

(ii) Foundational units offered by the School of Economics within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences:

  • ECON5001 Microeconomic Theory
  • ECMT5001 Principles of Econometrics

Commerce specialisations

For a specialisation in the Master of Commerce component of the combined degree, students complete at least one six-credit point prerequisite foundational unit of study and a minimum of four additional advanced units of study (24 credit points). Foundational units for a specialisation should be completed within the first semester of study.

Students select the units for their specialisation and any additional electives from the following specialisation subject areas:

(i) Specialisations offered by the University of Sydney Business School:

Note: Students cannot complete a specialisation in 'Logistics and Supply Chain Management' for the Commerce component under this combined degree.

Logistics Management core units of study

Students complete the foundation unit, TPTM5001, in their first semester of enrolment and the capstone unit, TPTM6170, in their final semester of enrolment.

# Students demonstrating extensive practical experience in the logistics industry may apply for a waiver from the requirement to complete TPTM5001 Logistics and Supply Chain Management. This allows another Logistics Management unit of study to be substituted for TPTM5001. Students should send their resume with a covering email outlining their experience to the Postgraduate Coordinator for Logistics Management, Professor David Walters (david.walters@sydney.edu.au).

Degree progression

The following table illustrates a degree progression example for a student enrolled in the Master of Commerce and Master of Logistics Management on a full-time basis completing three or four units of study (18 or 24 credit points) per semester, completing in 2.5 years.

These resolutions must be read in conjunction with applicable University By-laws, Rules and policies including (but not limited to) the University of Sydney (Coursework) Rule 2000 (the 'Coursework Rule'), the Resolutions of the Faculty, the University of Sydney (Student Appeals against Academic Decisions) Rule 2006 (as amended) and the Academic Board policies on Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism.

The attendance pattern for this course is full time or part time according to candidate choice.

3 Master's type

The master's degrees in these resolutions are professional master's courses, as defined by the Coursework Rule.

4 Admission to candidature

(1)
Available places will be offered to qualified applicants ranked on merit in accordance with the following criteria:
(a)
a bachelor's degree, graduate diploma, graduate certificate or equivalent at an institution approved by the Business School and graded at a standard acceptable to the Business School; and/or where applicable:
(b)
relevant work experience requirements as determined by the Business School;
(c)
satisfaction of the English language requirements; and
(d)
any other minimum standards specified by the Business School.

5 Requirements for award

(1)
The units of study that may be taken for the course are set out in the Table of postgraduate units of study: Commerce and the Table of postgraduate units of study: Logistics Management.
(2)
To qualify for the award of the Master of Commerce and Master of Logistics Management, candidates must complete 108 credit points, including:
(a)
24 credit points of Logistics Management core units of study; and
(b)
24 credit points of Logistics Management elective units of study; and
(c)
12 credit points of Commerce core units of study; and
(d)
a maximum of 18 credit points of Commerce foundational units of study; and
(e)
a Commerce specialisation other than Logistics and Supply Chain Management; and
(g)
any additional elective units of study from the Commerce specialisations required to make 108 credit points in total.
(3)
In this combined degree, units completed for the Master of Logistics Management component cannot be counted towards the Master of Commerce component.

6 Specialisations

Completion of a specialisation is a requirement of the Master of Commerce. The specialisations available are listed under the resolutions for the Master of Commerce. The Logistics and Supply Chain Management specialisation is not available in this combined degree. Units completed for the Master of Logistics Management component cannot be used to count towards a specialisation in the Commerce component.

7 Course transfer

A candidate may abandon the combined program and elect to complete either the Master of Commerce or the Master of Logistics Management in accordance with the resolutions governing that degree.

8 Transitional provisions

(1)
These resolutions apply to students who commenced their candidature after 1 January, 2012.
(2)
Candidates who commenced prior to 1 January, 2012 must complete the requirements in accordance with the resolutions in force at the time of their commencement, provided that requirements are completed by a January, 2017. The Business School may specify a later date for completion or specify alternative requirements for completion of candidatures that extend beyond this time.
