Transport Management

This section outlines the Master's, Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate in Transport Management offered by the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies in the University of Sydney Business School.

The Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies in the University of Sydney Business School is an Australian Key Centre of Excellence and a world class research institute with strong industry links and a key role in developing innovative ideas in transportation policy and professional practice (sydney.edu.au/business/itls). Our programs focus on policy, strategic planning and management; developing specialist skills in: applying concepts, techniques and principles that underlie transport management; understanding the relationships between government agencies and the private sector in the provision, financing, operation and maintenance of transport networks; using contemporary modelling techniques and data collection processes to solve problems in transport management, planning and analysis; and managing the impacts of future trends in transportation. We provide our students with connections to industry through practical case studies, presentations from transport professionals, site visits and the opportunity to undertake work placements with our industry partners.

Course structures

Master of Transport Management

To be awarded the Master of Transport Management, students complete ten units of study (60 credit points), comprising:

  • five core units of study, including foundation, advanced and a capstone unit (30 credit points)
  • five elective units of study (30 credit points).
Graduate Diploma in Transport Management

To be awarded the Graduate Diploma in Transport Management, students complete six units of study (36 credit points), comprising:

  • four core units of study, comprising foundation and advanced units, (24 credit points)
  • two elective units of study (12 credit points).
Graduate Certificate in Transport Management

To be awarded the Graduate Certificate in Transport Management, students complete four core units of study (24 credit points), comprising foundation and advanced units.

Core units of study


(i) Foundation

Students must complete the following two foundation units of study (12 credit points):

  • ITLS5100 Transport and Infrastructure Foundations (must be completed in first semester of study)
  • ITLS5200 Quantitative Logistics and Transport.


(ii) Advanced

Students must complete the following two advanced units of study (12 credit points):

  • ITLS6100 Logistics & Transport Economics
  • ITLS6101 Global Freight Logistics Management.


(iii) Capstone (Master's degree only)

Students in the Master’s degree must complete the six credit point capstone unit of study in their final semester of study:

  • ITLS6190 Transport & Infrastructure Systems.

Elective units of study

Students enrolled in the individual Transport Management courses choose their elective units as follows:

  • Master's degree: five elective units (30 credit points)
  • Graduate Diploma: two elective units (12 credit points)
