Welcome

Dean of the Sydney College of the Arts

Welcome to Sydney College of the Arts (SCA), a dynamic community employing Australia’s foremost professional artists and curators, with established careers in the contemporary art world, and respected writers with international research reputations.

You are now part of one of the world’s best universities and Australia’s most respected educator of contemporary artists. For almost 40 years SCA has been producing future leaders of contemporary art. SCA encourages experimentation and fosters practitioners who question, test and shape our world. Our students flourish in the community of artists teaching artists in a mutually supportive and nurturing environment.

The range of programs at undergraduate, master's and doctoral levels provides a vibrant and conceptually coherent coverage of subjects relevant to international contemporary arts.

The recently enhanced Bachelor of Visual Arts enables students to experience a broad introduction to studio disciplines, incorporating critical studies as central to the teaching of contemporary art. Students are provided with a balance of trans-disciplinary emphasis and disciplinary mastery.

The SCA Graduate School is a highly regarded academic centre recognised for supporting visual artists who wish to develop their practice within a structured research culture.

SCA offers two updated degrees. The new Master of Moving Image (MMI) offers a unique and hands-on education in moving image production and the Master of Contemporary Art (MCA) has been specifically designed to support the development of a career in contemporary art practice.

As a University of Sydney student, you are encouraged to take advantage of the full range of activities and facilities provided by one of Australia’s leading universities. I encourage you to get involved; join the student society, attend the regular art talks and become part of the community at the SCA exhibitions and events held in the SCA Galleries.

Our alumni have experienced highly successful careers in the visual arts, screen arts, design, education, arts administration and publishing and continue to be part of our community. I trust that your time at SCA with be an integral step in your path to a creative career.
