HIV, STIs and Sexual Health

Stream: HIV, STIs and Sexual Health

Pathway: Counselling

Sexual Health Counselling and Sex Therapy are emerging areas of professional practice. Sexual wellbeing is an important aspect of a healthy life. Sexual Health Counselling focuses on issues of sexual and gender diversity, sexual health including HIV/STIs and sexual behaviour. Sex Therapy also addresses issues around sexual functioning and psychosexual wellbeing. The Counselling Pathway meets the sexological education and training component of the accreditation criteria for the Society of Australian Sexologists (SAS), ASSERT NSW, and American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT).

The Counselling Pathway is suitable for:

  • Recent graduates in psychology, counselling, occupational therapy, rehabilitation therapy and social work who are interested in pursuing a career in HIV, STIs and Sexual Health counselling and therapy; or
  • More established professionals (such as nurses, therapists, counsellors, psychologists, social workers, teachers, medical practitioners, relationship therapists, clergy, journalists, occupational therapists, rehabilitation counsellors) wishing to gain greater knowledge and understanding in these areas.
