Biographical details

Dr Purcell is actively involved with the clinical management of infants and children with hearing loss and craniofacial anomalies such as cleft palate and velocardiofacial syndrome.

Dr Purcell’s active research interests and projects are focused on speech and language development and disorders in infants and children with hearing loss and craniofacial anomalies such as cleft palate.

Dr Purcell is actively involved with the clinical management of infants and children with hearing loss and craniofacial anomalies such as cleft palate and velocardiofacial syndrome. The difficulties that children with hearing loss and craniofacial anomalies and their families encounter in communication across the lifespan prompted her to research ways to improve the speech and language outcomes for these children. Dr Purcell’s research has examined how best to measure perceptual speech outcomes to assist the evaluation of the best type of intervention, the development of speech and language in infants with hearing loss and cleft palate and some intervention research to determine the efficacy of different types of intervention. Dr Purcell has also explored how best to assist parents of children with hearing loss and cleft palate at the time of diagnosis.
