Thesis title: Prospective memory processes related to depressive, anxious, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms

Supervisors: Mairwen JONES , Lynne HARRIS

Thesis abstract:

Prospective memory (PM) refers to memory for future intentions. This cognitive process relies upon a range of intact functions such as retrospective memory, attentional control, and various executive functions for success. Aberrant PM performance has been identified among populations who exhibit heightened depressive (e.g. Li et al., 2013; Rude et al., 1999), anxious (e.g. Harris & Menzies, 2003), and obsessive-compulsive symptoms (e.g. Cuttler & Graf, 2008; Yang et al, 2015); however, it is unclear whether the presence of such symptoms leads to deficits in PM, or whether PM deficits serve to intensify and perpetuate these symptoms. In order to clarify this point several studies have been conducted that investigate PM processes among individuals whose symptom severity ranges from clinically significant to the subclinical experience of psychological symptoms in nonclinical populations. The current investigation aims firstly to determine the specific PM processes where individuals who report these psychological symptoms demonstrate impairments. Secondly, it seeks to determine the direction of causation which underlies such deficits. Finally, this project aims to utilise these findings to contribute to the understanding of the pathogenesis and nature of these disorders, as well as to inform recommendations for their treatment. In order to achieve these aims a systematic review of the literature published to date will be conducted to determine the current state of the field, and its results will inform subsequent studies in this investigation.
