Biographical details

Professor Cusick is an occupational therapist and national authority on the professionalization of occupational therapy in Australia. Her work has informed the development of occupational therapy workforce, research and education capacity building strategies. She was made a Fellow of the World Federation of Occupational Therapists in 1995, and was awarded the Occupational Therapy Australia Sylvia Docker Memorial Lecture in 2001 for distinguished contributions to education and research. Professor Cusick is widely published in national and international journals in the subject areas including neurorehabilitation, community based rehabilitation, inter-professional education, research training, and the history of occupational therapy. She is or has been an editorial board member of a number of journals including the American Journal of Occupational Therapy, Leadership and Organisational Development and the Australian Occupational Therapy Journal of which she is currently Editor in Chief. She was and remains an inaugural member of the OT Australia Research Foundation. Professor Cusick now holds the inaugural Occupational Therapy Chair and leads the Discipline.

She has worked as an occupational therapy clinician and was an occupational therapy academic at the University of Sydney from 1983 to 1994. For twenty years she held senior academic management positions, at Western Sydney University and the University of Wollongong, leading multidisciplinary departments, faculties and colleges in health, biomedical and social sciences with primary responsibility for curriculum, learning and teaching. She was Chair of Academic Senate and a Trustee of Western Sydney University for seven years, and Director of the UWS College for four years. She served as the NSW Vice Chancellor’s Committee appointment to the Statutory Board of Studies NSW and has been Deputy Chair of the Australian Committee of Chairs of Academic Boards. In 2011 she was appointed Emeritus Professor to the Office of Vice Chancellor and University President at the Western Sydney University for “her distinguished academic record in both research and teaching and her substantial contribution to governance at the University of Western Sydney”.
