Biographical details
Cate Madill is the Director of the Voice Research Laboratory at the Faculty of Health Sciences. She conducts experimental and applied clinical research into the mechanism and processes that change the voice. This includes investigation of specific vocal cue and response paradigms and efficacy of voice training and therapy elements in the context of training professional voice users and assessment and treatment of people with voice disorders. This includes investigation into the principles of motor learning (PML) as they apply to learning voice motor tasks, and identification of optimal vocal function to improve effectiveness of treatment and training programs. Her research involves use of the latest voice measurement equipment including high-speed larygoscopy, ultrasound, respiratory, electrophysiology and acoustic measurement and psychoacoustic evaluation.
Research interests
Previous research has investigated the impact of manipulating different laryngeal structures on the sound of the voice and listener attributions of the speaker. She has also investigated treatments used in Australia by Speech Pathologists in the management of children with vocal nodules and adults with functional voice disorders.Current research includes identification of the vocal characteristics of radio broadcasters, investigation of the impact of lung volume on voice onset, voice outcomes after laser resection of early glottic cancer and the development and implementation of a PML Pre-practice Framework in both clinical and teaching contexts. She has supervised 1 Master’s student and numerous honors students to successful publication of their research projects.She has taught university courses in voice science and disorders and voice technique for actors, and is the lecturer in Voice in the Discipline of Speech Pathology.
