Biographical details
Eric Emerson is Professor of Disability Population Health at the Centre for Disability Research and Policy where he leads on the Centre’s stream of work on disability and disadvantage. He is also Professor of Disability & Health Research at the Centre for Disability Research, Lancaster University, UK and Co-Director of the English specialist Public Health Observatory on intellectual disabilities.
He has been a member of advisory groups to several government and non-government organisations. Since 2008 he has been responsible for liaison between IASSIDD (the international community of researchers and research centers in intellectual and developmental disability) and the World Health Organization. In 2008 he was awarded IASSIDD’s Distinguished Career Award for research.
He has authored over 280 publications (books, book chapters and journal articles) on issues related to the wellbeing and social inequalities faced by people with disabilities, especially children with disabilities and adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities. He is one of the most frequently cited researchers in the world on issues relating to disability.
His main research interests lie in understanding and addressing the health and social inequalities faced by people with disabilities.
