Biographical details

Gillian Nisbet researches and teaches in the areas of interprofessional learning and work integrated learning within healthcare. Her PhD was on the topic of informal workplace interprofessional learning. Gillian has over 20 publications related to interprofessional learning. Gillian’s research funding has included a grant from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council for developing interprofessional learning within the Australian context and 3 University of Sydney Large Educational Innovations grants to expand opportunities for interprofessional learning within curriculum. Most recently Gillian has led a Sydney Interdisciplinary Clinical Training Network (ICTN) funded project to develop and evaluate a suite of interprofessional learning resources for students and their` supervisors for use in placement settings. Gillian’s research interests also include supporting student supervisors through peer group mentoring. She was awarded funding through the Sydney ICTN to develop, implement and evaluate a peer group mentoring framework for student supervisors. In 2016 Gillian received a University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor's Award for Excellence in the category of Outstanding Educational Engagement and Innovation.

Gillian previously worked as a clinical dietitian for 15 years within a large Sydney metropolitan teaching hospital. Through that position, Gillian has gained extensive experience in facilitating student learning in the clinical setting.

Gillian currently works within the Work Integrated Learning Unit of the Faculty of Health Sciences, The University of Sydney, where she is responsible for the preparation and support of allied health students whilst on clinical placement.

Gillian’s interest and motivation for teaching and researching in interprofessional learning is her belief that through learning from each other, students and health professionals are better placed to meet the challenges and opportunities faced in health, now and in the future.
