Biographical details

Joan O'Donnell (nee Stokes) graduated with a B.AppSc.(OT) from the Cumberland College of Health Sciences and M.Sc(Med.) from The University Of Sydney investigating the functional outcomes after surgery for intracerebral haemorrhage. Joan has completed her PhD examining the functional outcomes of cerebrovascular neurosurgery at Macquarie University, Australia. The research investigated the quality of life and ability to drive after surgical and conservative management of unruptured intracranial aneurysms and brain arteriovenous malformations.

Joan has worked in public and private institutions and in private practice. The range of clinical fields Joan has experienced includes neurosurgery, neurology, oncology, orthopaedics, aged care and occupational rehabilitation. Joan has worked in various management positions such as Quality Improvement Coordinator at 2 institutions, Executive Officer for Allied Health and Manager of Medical and Hospital Utilisation Review for a major health fund.

Teaching and supervision

Currently teaching in the undergraduate and Masters occupational therapy courses.

Current projects

Quality of life measurement for brain tumour outcome studies.

Awareness of driving ability after cerebrovascular neurosurgery
