Thesis title: Jockey and Rider Safety: A study of rider response capability to reduce catastrophic and serious injury risk in racing and equestrian falls.

Thesis abstract:

�p�«p»People who ride racehorses or engage in regular riding activities in equestrian sports such as eventing have a high risk of falling from their horse and falls can result in catastrophic or serious injuries. The aim of this research is to study factors that affect jockey and rider response capability in falls to reduce catastrophic and serious injury risk. The use of air jackets by riders in equestrian eventing was investigated. A retrospective analysis of data from the international governing body for eventing was conducted for 2,890 riders who fell wearing an air jacket and 2,425 riders who fell while not wearing an air jacket from 2013 to 2017. A chi-square test determined whether an association was present between injury severity and air jacket usage and binary logistic regression determined the effect size of the association. Air jacket usage was found to be significantly associated with serious or fatal injuries in falls (X²=7.32; p=0.007). Riders wearing an air jacket had 1.6 times (95% CI; 1.13 to 2.20) increased odds of sustaining a serious or fatal injury in a fall compared to riders not wearing an air jacket. Further investigation is needed to understand the reason(s) for the identified association. Further studies are to being carried out to describe and investigate the biomechanics and other characteristics of falls including fall times and pre-fall warning signals that jockeys and riders experience. Rider response capability is being investigated in a laboratory experiment to measure and examine the effect of perceptual cues on human response time. Finally, a training intervention will be carried out to assess and validate the effect that fall safety training has on rider response action in simulated and actual fall scenarios.«/p»�/p�
