Biographical details
Associate Professor Fransen has background in clinical physiotherapy and has completed a Masters of Public Health at the University of Sydney. She has considerable experience in conducting clinical trials among people with hip or knee osteoarthritis and has published widely in leading international journals. Her PhD thesis was focused on developing effective class-based exercise programs for older people with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis. Post-doctoral, Marlene has successfully completed the HIPAID study, a large multicentre trial among 900 patients undergoing elective hip replacement surgery in Australia and New Zealand and the PAFORM study evaluating hydrotherapy or Tai Chi classes for osteoarthritis. She has also worked on observational studies, including a large population-based survey of knee and back pain and disability in Inner Mongolia. Marlene is lead author on three ongoing Cochrane Systematic Reviews (Exercise for osteoarthritis of the hip, Exercise for osteoarthritis of the knee; NSAIDs for preventing heterotopic bone formation after hip replacement).
Research interests
To improve the accessibility of effective non-pharmacological interventions for people with symptomatic osteoarthritis involving the lower limbs.
Current projects
Marlene is currently leading two large clinical trials: The Longterm Evaluation of Glucosamine study (LEGS) evaluating the symptomatic and structural benefits of glucosamine, with or without chondroitin, among more than 600 people with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis; the MARKER study, a multicentre study evaluating a intensive exercise classes among patients who have recently undergone total knee replacement surgery.
