Biographical details

Associate Professor Mackey is the Associate Dean Research Education and an Associate Professor of Physiotherapy in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Sydney. A/Prof Mackey's research is aligned to the Musculoskeletal Health and the Physical Activity, Lifestyle, Ageing and Wellbeing faculty research themes and to the Prevention Research Collaboration at the Charles Perkins Centre of The University of Sydney. A/Prof Mackey's research is primarily focussed on work injury prevention and the promotion of workplace-based physical activity, work ability and wellbeing in the context of an increasing sedentary and ageing working population. He is currently conducting a series of studies to evaluate the impact workstation and office design on the health and sitting behaviour in office workers, and on the impact of physical activity in working life on the need for recovery from work. His doctoral research completed in 2005, evaluated ergonomic and exercise approaches for optimising performance of manual work. A/Prof Mackey is often invited to present his research findings at local and international scientific conferences. He has published 68 peer reviewed journal papers, book chapters and commissioned reports and has received over $A1.5 million in nationally competitive, industry, government and philanthropic research funding. A/Prof Mackey is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy and regularly reviews manuscripts submitted to the international scientific publications. He has reviewed grants for the National Health and Medical Research Council and the Physiotherapy Research Foundation. He has supervised 8 HDR students to completion and he is currently supervising 9 HDR students as primary (3) or auxiliary (6) supervisor.

In the Discipline of Physiotherapy A/Prof Mackey was Course Director of the undergraduate Physiotherapy program and is responsible for the occupational health curriculum.

A/Prof Mackey has served as past chair of the Occupational Health Physiotherapy Australia (NSW Chapter) and as a member of the Physiotherapy Council of NSW (2012-2018) and as chair of the Health Committee of Council. He is chair of the Move More Working Group of Health Sydney University.
