Biographical details

Dr Martin Mackey is a Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of Physiotherapy and research member of the Ageing, Work and Health Research Unit and Clinical and Rehabilitation Sciences FRG at the University of Sydney. Martin is responsible for teaching and learning of the occupational health curriculum in the undergraduate and graduate physiotherapy programs. His doctoral research completed in 2005, evaluated ergonomic and exercise approaches for optimising performance of manual work. Martin has presented his research findings at numerous local and international scientific conferences including as an invited speaker, and was most recently convenor of the national Occupational Health Physiotherapy Australia Conference in Sydney in 2009.

Martin has over 15 peer reviewed publications and book chapters and has received over $A380,000 in research funding. He has reviewed manuscripts submitted to the international scientific publications, Journal of Physiotherapy, Physiotherapy, Occupational Health Southern Africa and BMC Pulmonary Medicine and he has reviewed grant applications on behalf of the Physiotherapy Research Foundation. Martin has supervised 1 PhD, 3 Masters and 5 Honours student projects to completion and he is currently supervising 2 PhD and 1 honours student projects. He is a past chair of Occupational Health Physiotherapy Australia (NSW Chapter).

Research interests

Martin's current research interests, supported by an Early Career Research Excellence Award (2008-2009), is focussed on injury prevention, workability and the promotion of health enhancing physical activity in the ageing sedentary workforce

Teaching and supervision

  • Unit of Study Coordinator: Physiotherapy in the Workplace (UG4); Physiotherapy in Selected Populations (GEM2)

Awards and honours

In 2011 Martin was awarded the Outstanding Abstract and Presentation (Asia-Western Pacific Region) Prize at the 16th International World Confederation of Physical Therapy (WCPT) Conference Amsterdam June 21-23 for a research study he conceived and led - Mackey et al Walking to wellness in an ageing sedentary university community – a randomised controlled feasibility study’ RR-PL-2334.
