Biographical details

Professor Sue McAllisterhas over 30 years experience as a speech pathologist, clinical educator, project manager, and academic. She currently leads the Work Integrated Learning portfolio as in the Faculty of Health Sciences as Associate Dean. Her team is responsible for liaising with workplaces to create and support high quality learning and teaching practices that create value for service users, workplaces and the students.

Research interests

Professor McAllister's teaching, research and consultancy activities aim to contribute to ensuring that the public are well served by our graduate health professionals.She is interested inand has expertise with regard to quality learning, teaching and assessment practice including curriculum design and outcomes/competency oriented curricula and strategies that support the development of thinking professionals who can apply their knowledge effectively in the workplace. Her contributions to have been recognised by a number of prestigous national awards and invitations to serve on advisory committees.

Professor McAllister's research is directed to investigating the nature of health professional competency - what is it and how can educators facilitate its development through university and workplace based learning and assessment to ensure that the public is well served by our graduate health professionals? She has related areas of research that investigate the quality of allied health assessment practices through understanding the application of clinical reasoning within this process as well as improving clinical assessment practices. Professor McAllister’s research has transformed the culture of work integrated assessment and learning within her professional discipline of speech pathology through the ongoing development and support of the COMPASS®: Competency in Speech Pathology assessment tool (McAllister et al, 2013). Her research publications on work integrated learning and assessment have been cited by and informed WIL practices in 15 different health professions. Professor McAllister has been awarded over 2 million dollars of grants to support this research. [note, listing of grant funding is in the process of being updated]
