Biographical details

Dr Zoe McKeough is a physiotherapist (BAppSc (Physio) with distinction 1998, PhD 2004) who has been an academic at The University of Sydney (USyd) since 2005. She currently holds the role of senior lecturer for the Discipline of Physiotherapy and senior researcher for the Heart and Lung Physiotherapy Research Team.

Dr McKeough is an internationally-recognised researcher in the area of respiratory physiotherapy, particularly in the area of exercise training in people with chronic lung disease. Her research program has focused on the impact of lung diseases, particularly chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis and dust diseases on exercise performance and the effects of interventions such as pulmonary rehabilitation, to improve exercise capacity and quality of life in people with these conditions. She isparticularly world-renowned for the workshe hasundertaken determining i) optimal modes of exercise training in COPD of which upper limb exercise in COPD has been a specific focus as well as Tai Chi, water-based therapy and telerehabilitation, and ii) the impact of exercise training on physical activity outcomes in people with chronic lung disease. Zoe is also interested in interventions that might reduce sedentary behaviour for people with chronic lung diseases and is starting to examine ways that technology and e-health interventions might facilitate this.

This work has resulted in a total of 57 publications (1 book chapter and 56 journal articles in international, peer-reviewed journals) with 35 journal articles since 2012 (h-index 14 via Google Scholar, 685 citations). Dr McKeough has attracted over $2.8 million in funding over her career with $1.7 million in funding since 2012.

Teaching and supervision

  • Dr McKeough has provided extensive supervision and mentoring to honours and RHD students through her academic career. She has co-supervised 7 PhD completions and is currently primary supervisor for 2 PhD students. Her students have won prizes nationally and internationally including the Anne Woolcock Young Investigator’s Award and the Best Young Researcher Awards and Best Presentation Awards. Zoe has also directly supervised 11 honours students and been an informal mentor to a further 9 students since 2007. One of her honours students won the University Medal in 2008 and a further 3 students have successfully published their work.
  • Dr McKeough is also the team leader for the cardiopulmonary physiotherapy curriculum and advanced units curriculum (representing 30% of the Discipline of Physiotherapy’s curriculum).

Current projects

Zoe is engaged in the following projects:
