Belong@FHS and GEMClub@FHS Mentoring Program
Belong@FHS is the Faculty of Health Sciences student peer-mentoring program. It’s an exciting initiative that combines advice and social events to make sure that all our students get the most out of their degrees. First year students get the support of senior students and senior students develop leadership skills and can be mentored by alumni.
The program is a great way to make friends, learn about the campuses (where the clean bathrooms/restrooms are, where the best coffee is) and become a bit more familiar with university life and expectations. You can see our mentors out and about in their teal (green-ish) coloured shirts.
Who participates in the program?
All Faculty of Health Sciences (and combined degree) students can sign up to be part of the program. Students in their first year are invited to be our mentees and students in second to fourth years are eligible to become mentors.
As part of Belong@FHS, we also have GEMClub@FHS. This is a peer-mentoring program for Graduate Entry Masters (GEM) students. It follows the same structure as the undergraduate program but is specifically for our GEM students.
We have some wonderful mature-aged students as well who can offer advice to students who are not HSC-leavers. This was initiated by our mature-aged students who said that mentoring was great but it would be even better to talk with someone who understood the other challenges and adventures of coming back to university with more life experience.
How does mentoring work?
Mentoring happens in teams. We have teams of two mentors and six to eight mentees. The mentoring program itself changes from year to year based on feedback from our mentors and mentees. Every year, there is a combination of informal mentoring, workshops and social events with lots of food!
Please refer to the 2015 Belong@FHS program for more information.
How do I sign up?
It’s great that you’re interested in the program –we’d love to have you on board! You can sign up as a mentor (senior students) or as a mentee (first year students only).
