ATC - Use in Australia

The ATC system is the only International standard drug classification system used for drug statistics reporting in Australia. It is currently used by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Branch of the Department of Health and Ageing to report drug utilisation under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (10), by the AIHW GPSCU BEACH program (11) to report drug prescribing by general practitioners on a National basis and by other researchers to report Australian drug statistics. It is used by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for high level classification of therapeutic substances registered with the TGA. The ATC system is an integral part of the EAN based Australian Catalogue of Medicines commissioned by the Australian Government based on the work of the Medicines Coding Council of Australia (12).
