Accelerate Communication Excellence (ACE) program

The Accelerate Communication Excellence (ACE) program is available for all first-year students enrolled in both undergraduate and graduate entry master’s degrees at the Faculty of Health Sciences.

ACE is an online platform that has been developed to improve the professional communication competence of all first-year students ahead of their first clinical placement.

Why do you need advanced communication skills?

Advanced communication skills are an essential component of successfully completing all clinical placement units. Clinical placements require students to deal with people from different backgrounds and ages in a wide range of situations. To succeed at clinic students need to a be able to communicate clearly and with agility in these different situations, such as:

  • A 75-year-old client who speaks Mandarin only
  • A 90-year-old woman who speaks English but is quite deaf
  • A 10-week-old baby
  • An Aboriginal boy who lives in Dubbo

The program is completed in 30-60 minutes in week 5 of semester 1. A further immersive program is then offered to those students identified as needing extra support in July.

The online interactive ACE platform will grow and assess your communication competence in five areas:

  1. Listening
  2. Reading
  3. Writing
  4. Reasoning
  5. Speaking
