Occupational Healh & Safety and clinical placements
Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) should be a concern to all in the workplace, including students, whether on campus at the University or off campus in an external workplace whilst on placement.
The OHS Act 2000 and the OHS Regulation 2001 identify the general requirements necessary to promote and ensure a safe and healthy workplace. They are designed to minimise injuries sustained in the workplace by requiring responsibilities of individuals and corporations/businesses. This includes responsibilities of management, supervisors and employees (including students).
Under the OHS Act 2000, the duties of employees and therefore students are;
- Not to act in a wilful manner that endangers the health & safety of him/herself or others;
- To comply as far as practicable with the employers instructions including policies and procedures and safe systems of work; and
- To use protective clothing and equipment as far as practicable, that has been provided by the employer
