Intervention for Speech Sound Disorders in Children: One-day workshop for Speech Pathologists

Dr Elise Baker

Presented by Elise Baker, PhD

Find out what recent research has to say about some long-standing questions....

“Does eclectic phonological intervention achieve outcomes equivalent to prescribed phonological intervention approaches?”

“Is there an ideal ‘dose’ for children who have a SSD? How much intervention is enough?”

This one-day workshop is for speech pathologists who work with children who have a phonologically-based speech sound disorder (SSD). The workshop will provide speech pathologists with both knowledge and practical strategies for:

  • implementing a select range of evidence-based phonological intervention approaches
  • quickly analyzing children’s speech to identify and match ideal targets with evidence-based intervention approaches
  • reducing toddler and preschoolers’ risk of future literacy difficulties
  • managing concomitant speech and literacy difficulties in young school-age children, using a psycholinguistic approach

The workshop will be divided into three parts.

  1. Part 1: Review of a select range of evidence-based phonological intervention approaches
Part one of the workshop will provide speech pathologists with an opportunity to compare and contrast their implementation of specific phonological intervention approaches with researchers’ original intentions. The approaches to be examined include: multiple oppositions (Williams, 2010), perception-production intervention (Rvachew & Brosseau-Lapre, 2010), Cycles (Prezas & Hodson, 2010), and phonological intervention alternating with morphosynatax intervention (Tyler & Haskill, 2010). Evidence on ‘dosage’ or how much is enough will also be addressed. During this component of the workshop, speech pathologists will learn how to quickly analyse children’s speech, identify ideal treatment targets and match targets to suitable evidence-based intervention approaches.
  2. Part 2: Overview of strategies for targeting emergent literacy skills in preschoolers who have phonologically-based SSD
Research suggests that even if children (with a history of SSD) start school with relatively intelligible speech, they may still be at risk of future literacy difficulties (Anthony, Aghara, Dunkelburger, Anthony, Williams, & Zhang, 2011). Part two of the workshop will provide speech pathologists with practical evidence-based strategies for targeting the emergent literacy skills (including underlying phonological processing skills) of the children on their caseloads who have SSD.
  3. Part 3: Overview of Stackhouse and Well’s (2001)psycholinguistic approach for managing concomitant speech and literacy difficulties in early school-age children
Children who begin school with unresolved or persisting SSD face an increased risk of literacy difficulties (Nathan & Simpson, 2001). During part three of the workshop, speech pathologists will learn how to conduct and use the findings from a psycholinguistic assessment to guide their development and implementation of individualized speech and literacy programs for early school-age children.

IS THIS WORKSHOP FOR YOU?

  • This workshop is designed for practising speech pathologists who work with children who have a speech sound disorder (SSD). It is a unique opportunity for speech pathologists to enrich their management of the toddler, preschool and early school-age children on their caseloads.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

  • Dr. Elise Baker is a speech pathologist and lecturer with Discipline of Speech Pathology, at The University of Sydney. She is recognized nationally and internationally for her expertise on the evidence-based management of speech sound disorders in children, and has a keen interest in helping clinicians put research into practice.
